Foods to avoid to keep your gums healthy
We all know that certain types of food and drink are bad for our teeth, but what about our gums? Here are some things that can increase your risk of gum-related problems.
Sugar
Itβs probably no surprise that this is the first entry on our list. Eating excessive amounts of sugar can add to the build-up of bad bacteria in your mouth. Reducing your intake of refined sugar and staying away from things like sucking sweets and lollipops can help you stave off gum disease by helping your body maintain a healthy balance of bacteria.
Acidic foods
Again, acidity can promote the growth of harmful bacteria in your mouth. So, reducing your intake of foods which have a high acid content can also help prevent gum disease. Acid also eats away at your tooth enamel, potentially leading to decay. Examples of food and drink with a high acid content include citrus fruits and juices, soft drinks and coffee. One tip is to neutralise or dilute some of the acid, such as by rinsing your mouth with water or only eating fruit as part of a meal, rather than as a standalone snack.
Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates, specifically refined carbohydrates, such as white bread, help to create a perfect breeding ground for those bad bacteria. The build-up of this bacteria can contribute to gum disease and other issues, such as bad breath.
Alcohol and coffee
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but these are both bad for your gums! In addition to acidity, coffee reduces the amount of saliva in your mouth. You need your saliva to maintain the right balance of bacteria. Alcohol also has this drying effect and is high in sugar, which feeds those harmful bacteria.
